LFCHD encourages free HIV testing on World AIDS Day

The Lexington-Fayette County Health Department is among many Lexington, state, federal and international agencies taking part in World AIDS Day on Dec. 1.

The health department is hosting “World AIDS Day 2012: Reflect. Remember. Celebrate” on Dec. 1 at the Lexington Public Library’s downtown branch, 140 E. Main St., as an opportunity for people to show their support for people living with HIV/AIDS and to commemorate those who have died from the disease. Free 20-minute HIV testing will be held 10 a.m.-4 p.m., and a special ceremony will be held 3:30-4:30 p.m.

WLEX, WKYT highlight LFCHD tips for a safe Thanksgiving

Russ Cantrell, a senior environmental health specialist, recently visited the kitchens of reporters from WLEX and WKYT to put an interactive spotlight on food safety tips for Thanksgiving. Each year before the holiday, LFCHD sends out a media release (featured below) with ways to prevent foodborne illnesses, and the interviews allow viewers to see the tips in action.

LFCHD celebrates with Thanksgiving luncheon

Members of the Lexington-Fayette County Health Department and HealthFirst Bluegrass enjoyed turkey, ham, several side dishes and desserts Wednesday, Nov. 14, as part of the annual Thanksgiving luncheon. This year’s meal was sponsored by the LFCHD Employee Association and the LFCHD Wellness Committee.

Allison Evans, Child Care Health Consultation (CCHC) consultant and Carley Travis, CCHC intern, recently visited a preschool in Jessamine County and taught more than 60 students why hand washing is important. Each student used glow-in-the-dark lotion and a black light to see how well they were washing their hands.
