Bailey spreads awareness during National Breastfeeding month

August is National Breastfeeding month. Doraine Bailey, Breastfeeding Support Services, spent most of this month helping to organize events educating the community about the importance of breastfeeding, and support services and programs offered.

Do you want to learn more about breastfeeding? We offer a free class at Babies ‘R Us in Hamburg the third Thursday of each month! The class covers newborn baby behavior; birth, skin-to-skin, and the hospital experience; how to get started with breastfeeding; overcoming challenges of the first two weeks with baby; pumps and other gadgets; and balancing breastfeeding and work. For more information about the class or to register, call 859-288-2348.

We also partnered with Mindful Moms of the Bluegrass and the Global Big Latch On to host a breastfeeding event, where women gather together to breastfeed and offer peer support to each other. Lexington’s Big Latch On took place on Saturday, August 6 at Pleasant Ridge Park. Other August events included an At Your Side Breastfeeding event at Babies R’ Us and Mother/Baby Rock and Relax area at the Woodland Arts Fair and Crave Festival.

LFCHD uses Pokémon GO to highlight physical fitness

The Lexington-Fayette County Health Department launched a special promotion using the Pokémon GO craze to highlight the importance of walking and daily exercise.

Information will be posted on LFCHD social media announcing the the 650 Newtown Pike location as a Pokemon Gym (and if none of that makes sense to you, ask a Pokémon GO player to translate!). Players will be encouraged to visit the location between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 9 a.m.-noon Friday to pick up health information, including the benefits of daily walking, safety tips while playing Pokémon GO and details on LFCHD programs, and a chance to win prizes. The contest ends Sept. 30. LFCHD employees are not eligible to win.

Players who pick up the flyer will be instructed to post a pre-scripted message about physical activity and the LFCHD in order to be entered into the prize drawing. After 1-2 weeks, we will place the contest information on our social media, thus allowing participation for those who are unable to visit 650 Newtown Pike during the regular business hours.

Hisle attends national diabetes conference

Carol Hisle, CHEE team leader, recently participated in the American Association of Diabetes Educators national conference held in San Diego. The theme was “Embrace Change, Strengthen our Future, Celebrate!”

The conference covered areas such as “Sustaining Your Diabetes Education Program: Take Your Program to the Next Level,” developing safe and effective exercise/nutrition programs, creating materials patients will understand and pharmacology updates.

Employee Association provides free Kona Ice to staff

The Employee Association offered a summer treat to LFCHD staff today by providing a free Kona Ice to the 61 people who took part. Thanks to EA for providing this!

Sandler and White honored for Board of Health service

Dr. Nat Sandler and Scott White were honored for their years of service at the Board of Health meeting on Monday evening. Sandler served for eight years and White served for five years. We thank them for their many years of service and wish them the best!
