At the Thanksgiving luncheon, the Employee Association asked staff to write down things they’re thankful for on a small note card. Those cards have been put on a special tree that’s now on display in Conference Room C on the third floor. Be sure to read over your co-workers’ comments when you’re in the area.
The Child Care Health Consultation program (Holly Clendenin, Catherine Lowe and Sarah McMahan) received the 2016 Outstanding Community Partner Award from Safe Kids Fayette County.
Safe Kids is an injury prevention program operated through the Kentucky Children’s Hospital. The coalition is made up of various community partners and each year they award one partner that has gone above and beyond.
Sarah McMahan is our CCHC representative for the coalition. She attends a monthly meeting and participates in one or two of their activities each month. Activities have included booster seat and car seat safety checks; teaching pedestrian, water, and home safety classes; distributing safe sleep information and assisting with classes on safe sleep.
Congratulations to Holly, Catherine and Sarah for a job well done!

Today is World Diabetes Day, and our staff has been working to educate the community about the warning signs for Type 1 Diabetes.
Nancy Hiner, a registered dietitian and certified diabetes educator, recently attended a statewide diabetes symposium and learned about a dramatic increase in undiagnosed Type 1 Diabetes with DKA (diabetic ketoacidosis) in kids 5 and younger. This could be a fatal mistake, and Hiner and her colleagues have been getting the word out about the warning signs.

On this Veterans Day, we salute the veterans who currently work at LFCHD. Thank you for your service and for continuing to help the community through your work in Public Health: Dan Satterfield (Air Force and Coast Guard), Ralph McCracken (Army), Skip Castleman (Navy), Julie Moon (Army) and Elaine Bailey (Army Reserves).
Moon is holding a picture of her brother, who is currently serving in the Army. We also honor the many employees who have family members who are veterans. The list is too many to many to name individually, so we offer a collective (and sincere) thank you!
The Employee Association hosted another successful event, this time feeding staff a delicious Thanksgiving meal!
Additionally, our employees brought in hundreds of clothing items to be donated to the Salvation Army. Thanks to all who participated and to the Employee Association for coordinating the day!
We gave a total of 1,125 free flu shots Oct. 20 at our annual free flu shot clinics!

The Lexington-Health Department’s diabetes team is staying busy during November’s Diabetes Awareness Month!
People with diabetes are being asked to share their story so others can learn how to cope with the disease, with the hashtag #ThisIsDiabetes being used on social media. This is part of a national campaign from the American Diabetes Association.
Below are two flyers being used, with one highlighting the #ThisIsDiabetes promotion, while the other showcases an upcoming diabetes program our staff will be participating in at William Wells Brown Community Center.
