HANDS reaching out during holidays

Thompson Road Baptist Church recently hosted a special event, at which attendees donated pre-school age toys, to be given to HANDS families and children during the Christmas holiday. Debbie Spence, HANDS FSW and member of the church, collected two boxes of age-appropriate toys for the kids at the event! When thanks were extended to Debbie from the HANDS staff, she replied, “Give God the glory, not me!”

You can help HANDS families during Christmas and throughout the year, too! Here are a list of items that HANDS most often needs: diapers, brightly colored duct tape, baby clothes (sizes Preemie-2T), bibs, plastic bowls, spoons, plates, forks, sippy cups, board books, bath toys, rattles, “squeekie” toys, puzzles, blocks and educational toys. If you would like to help HANDS families, you can turn in these items to the HANDS Program, located on the fourth floor of 650 Newtown Pike. HANDS staff greatly appreciate any of your contributions!

Did you know? HANDS (Health Access Nurturing Development Services) services are offered to any first- time parent on a voluntary basis. The family can enter the program during pregnancy and up until the baby is 12 weeks old. Families can continue in the program until the child is 2 years of age. New stress management class session added; now with CEU eligibility

Human Resources has now added an additional session of the $3 Birdfeeder: Managing Personal Stress training opportunity (please see image above for updated information). Per KBN #4-0113-7-16-013, 1.2 CEUs awarded for nursing attendance; however, all staff are welcome to attend. Don’t forget, if enrolled in the Worksite Wellness Incentive Plan, you are eligible to earn 25 wellness points for attending.

Dr. Leach receives plaque from Kentucky Pink Connection

Roanya Rice presents Commissioner of Health Dr. Rice Leach with a special plaque from the Kentucky Pink Connection honoring him for his participation in the 2012 Hot Seat for Hope fundraiser.

Kentucky Pink Connection’s primary purpose is to provide support by reducing and/or eliminating barriers to screening, diagnosis and treatment for breast cancer patients. Learn more about the organization here.

Health department site hosts Hill-n-Dale Sunday feeding ministry

Hill-n-Dale Christian Church recently relocated their Sunday feeding ministry location to the parking lot of 650 Newtown Pike, and held their first weekly feeding on Nov. 10.

The Community Health Equity & Education (CHEE) team recently hosted a baby shower for Jessica Jackson. The shower featured snacks, refreshments and world scramble and Play-Doh games. Baby Maya is expected in January. Congratulations, Jessica!

Employees stuff more fun into fall

The Public Health Employee Association hosted a Thanksgiving Lunch on Wednesday, Nov. 6, allowing staff the opportunity to enjoy the company of co-workers while dining on turkey, stuffing, potatoes, macaroni and cheese and a variety of desserts. Thanks to the following employees who helped with set up and takedown of the event: Elaine Bailey, Allison Evans, Jessica Jackson, Lauren Kirk, Dustin Knight, Blanca Marsh, Jason Taylor and Janey Wendschlag. The EA also wants to send a huge “thank you” to Maintenance staff for their help with the event, and to all employees who took time to attend the event and help make it a success.

WIC handout to be adapted for state use

The Lexington-Fayette County Health Department recently learned that a handout it produced for the WIC program will now be adapted by the state to use in other counties. The “Weaning from the Bottle” handout was developed by Greg Hiles, Rebekah Shoopman, Allison Douglas and Saymond Ardila.
